What was the worst comment you received about being a Tutor?

"What do you want to do with your life?"

"Nah. Tutors just look at the answer sheets at the back and mark."

"It must be great to have flexible working hours."

"Wow. You are a blessed girl with a husband who is able to support you financially from now on."

I have received a number of misconceptions about working as a Full Time Tutor - short term job, flexible working hours, financially unstable and the list goes on. While misconceptions are common and acceptable as most of us do not understand fully on how other industry works, I do urge people to learn to respect and acknowledge Tutor as an occupation.

  • We do not have flexible working hours. Once a slot is fixed for a particular lesson, we are effectively booked for the rest of the year.

  • We manage our own finances - savings, CPF contributions, investment etc. While an employed person fight for their chance to be promoted for pay increment, we fight by showing our teaching capabilities to fetch our deserved hourly rate.

  • Tutors' job is more than "looking at the answer sheet and mark". The behind scenes for tutors consist of doing lesson plan and curating worksheets to cater to students' needs. And hey, let's not forget about actual teaching during lessons and effective communication with students and parents.

Let's learn the respect all occupations. 🫡
